Devisil root (Levisticum officinale radix)

Devisil is a perennial plant with a specific smell. It is also known as lovage. The leaves are used as a spice in many national cuisines. In antiquity, they used devisilla for brain diseases, bed-wetting, as a purgative and to dispel external and internal swellings. In the Middle Ages, a tonic drink was prepared from the plant. According to Bulgarian belief, the consumption of devesil gives a person 9 powers. As early as the 19th century, the herb was found to inhibit the spread of tuberculosis bacteria. Devesil is used for skin diseases and for symptoms of profuse sweating. An infusion of the roots of the plant has a tonic effect on the gastrointestinal tract, stimulates the work of bile, reduces the formation of gas, removes gastric colic, improves appetite and reduces nervous excitability and anxiety. Harvesting of roots is during the months of September – October after the ripening of the fruit.
